what is a container vps
VPS is short for virtual private server. Simply put, it’s a virtual server sold as a private online service for your exclusive use. They store data, run applications, connect resources to the internet, and serve content to the world wide web. Virtual servers are completely isolated virtual environments that give you the experience of a physical server while only using and paying for the resources you need.
There are two types of VPS that HOSTAFRICA offers: 1) KVM based virtual machines (Cloud VMs) and 2) Containers. What sets them apart is their methods of virtualization. The biggest distinction between them is that each Cloud VPS runs on their own operating system, whereas containers share the operating system of the host server.
Therefore, VMs run like a virtual computer and can do more heavy-lifting, while containers are lightweight virtual environments, very economical and affordable. The HOSTAFRICA VPS is a container VPS, and only runs Linux. We have several Linux flavours to choose from, namely CentOS, Debian, Ubuntu, and SUSE.
You may even mount a custom ISO, but note that we only provide support for issues related to the abovementioned operating systems. If you’re looking for virtual machines and complete OS customisation, then head over to our Cloud Servers.

benefits of a container vps
Because container VPS's use operating system virtualization, they are extremely lightweight, making them super fast and affordable. The deployment is fast as well, which means you can have your VPS up and running in seconds. These virtual servers are completely isolated from each other, giving you more security and reliability.
VPS hosting provides a dedicated (physical) server experience without the exorbitant costs. If you’re tied down by the limitations of web (shared) hosting, but can’t afford your own server, then VPS server hosting is the perfect solution for you, plus you only pay for the resources you need.
Unlike shared hosting, you have full root access to your VPS container. Allowing you to customise your setup and use software that isn't part of a shared environment.
We host our VPS servers in a state-of-the-art data centre in Johannesburg, ensuring low latency for South Africans.
VPS hosting is ideal for IT professionals, web designers and developers; small business owners, hosting companies, and digital and marketing agencies. It is also best for WordPress, numerous websites, ecommerce sites, and lightweight applications you need to run in the cloud.

how to choose vps hosting
When you’re looking to buy the best VPS hosting in South Africa, there are key factors to consider. The customer support that VPS hosting companies offer vary greatly. Our client service is unmatched, as we strive to set a new standard of VPS hosting service in South Africa.
We offer a broad variety of tailored VPS's for all hosting requirements. Whatever your VPS hosting needs are, we’ll accommodate them. We uphold our standard of excellence by only using enterprise hardware and software brands that are renowned and trustworthy. All our VPS hosting plans come with unlimited bandwidth and generous resources.
When it comes to resources, RAM (memory) is the most important to keep in mind when choosing a vps hosting plan. Today’s applications, PHP/MySQL scripts, and website caching are super memory-intensive. Buying a VPS with ample RAM will make sure your scripts, applications, and websites are served faster.
Having said that, it’s important to check your resource and application requirements. Not all applications are compatible with container VPS servers, and you might need a virtual machine Cloud Server or Dedicated (physical) Server instead.

vps or cloud hosting
Container VPS is best if you’re on a budget and need a cost-effective local server experience. If you want to package lightweight applications, manage several websites or ecommerce sites, reduce your infrastructure footprint or get a small business in the cloud, then container VPS's are your best choice.
However, container VPS are limited by their host operating system (OS) and kernel. This means that you cannot customise your OS, making container VPS's incompatible with some third-party applications. So check software compatibility before buying a VPS for hosting.
Virtual machines (VMs) or Cloud Servers use hardware virtualisation and provide each VM with their own operating system. This allows for complete customisation and compatibility with third-party applications.
Additionally, some VPNs require specific kernel modules, so a VM would be better for you. Likewise, if you intend to run accounting software, a Windows VM or Cloud Server would be your best choice.
Because VMs are virtualised like a full virtual computer, they can do more heavy-lifting than container VPS's. If you want to run resource-intensive applications, we recommend Cloud Servers, otherwise, a VPS is ideal.
Lastly, another great benefit of our virtual machine Cloud Servers is that we offer them in global locations. So, if you have business in other countries, you can select a server location closer to your clients, providing them with a better experience and lower latency.
we have answers
If you don’t find a suitable server size on our website, please contact us so we can offer you a server tailored to your exact requirements.
Sure! If you have an existing hosting plan or server based on cPanel with another hosting company, we would be happy to take care of your migration.
At reasonable rates, we offer you full flexibility of your backups. Order a backup plan add-on at our VPS checkout. These are snapshots that allow you to roll back your virtual server to a previous state.
Currently you can choose between the following Linux versions: CentOS 8, 7; Debian 10, 9.0, 8.0; Ubuntu 20.04, 18.04, 16.04; and SUSE 42.1, 42.2, 42.3.
A vCPU is a Virtual Processing Unit. One or more vCPUs are assigned to a Virtual Machine (VM). Each vCPU is seen as a single physical CPU core by your servers operating system. Larger packages include more vCPU’s. The CPU is very often not a limiting factor. In the majority of the used cases the most important factor is how much RAM (memory) is needed. Modern PHP/MySQL scripts often use a lot of RAM, so RAM is very important when deciding on the package you buy.
Each server is deployed with 1 IP address to start with. You can request additional IP’s from us in case you need it. In such a case we charge a small monthly amount in addition.
You can host as many websites as you like on your virtual server, we do not define any limit. You just have to ensure the size of your VPS is always sufficient for the amount of resources your sites use. Your VPS can be upgraded or downgraded at any time to suit the number of sites you intend to host.
Easily login to your customer section, choose the product and click up- or downgrade. Upgrades will be processed immediately, downgrades at the end of the month.
VPS stands for virtual private server. A server is an industrial-sized physical computer that contains memory, processors, and storage. They’re used to store enormous amounts of data for large businesses, run applications, and connect resources to the internet. Now most businesses and individuals need these functionalities too, but on a much smaller scale. This is where VPS comes in.
As with any enterprise resource, physical servers are incredibly expensive, and most businesses and individuals cannot afford to buy one. More importantly, most don’t need an entire physical server, and certainly don’t have the expertise needed to set up and maintain them. So, VPS hosts like HOSTAFRICA, set up and maintain servers for the public.
Then we use virtualisation technology to economically divide up these physical servers into smaller, virtual portions. This is called a virtual server. These virtual servers give users the experience of a physical server and while being able to access and manage them remotely. This is the function of a virtual private server. The word private is just a marketing term that refers to the fact that virtual servers are sold to users for their exclusive use.
Now, smaller businesses or individuals who simply need to run a few websites or business applications online can afford to buy these VPSs, and only pay for the portion of resources they need. Businesses may use VPSs to store data and run applications so that employees can access it remotely. Individuals may use it as a remote gaming server or to run websites.
VPN stands for virtual private network, while VPS stands for virtual private server. The former is a network, the latter is a server. They have completely different functions, so one cannot be better than the other.
A virtual private server is simply a virtual server sold to a user for their private use. Like a physical computer, it’s function is to store data, run applications and services, connect resources to the internet, and serve content to the world wide web. However, what makes virtual servers special is cloud computing. This technology makes it possible to access and manage these virtual servers from anywhere in the world. Gone are the days where you have to drive to work to access your company data.
A virtual private network can be an accessory to a VPS. Just like a VPS enables remote access, VPNs enable users remote access to closed or public networks on a secure (private) connection. VPNs encrypt all communications, making your traffic hidden. This is handy for individuals trying to hide their location when trying to watch Netflix in another country.
For corporate benefit, VPNs provide businesses with a static IP address and allow only authorised users connected to the company VPN to access sensitive information. These VPNs are normally connected to and run on the company VPS.
Considering the costs and expertise VPS hosts invest to make this service available to the public, VPSs are the most cost-effective server solution on the market. VPS hosting is more expensive than shared web hosting, but the performance benefits far exceed the extra cost. Users get the experience of a dedicated (physical) server with near native server speeds for a tiny fraction of the price of a dedicated server.
Of course, the real cost to the end-user will depend on their resource requirements. SSD storage and software licences (Windows Server, cPanel, VMware, etc) are the most expensive aspects of VPS servers. The more of these you’ll need, the more costly it gets. Another factor to consider is that different VPS hosts offer different payment options. Either on a monthly/yearly subscription basis, or on a pay-as-you-go basis where you pay for exact resources used by the minute.
There are two types of VPSs. Containers and virtual machines (VMs). Containers use a lightweight operating system virtualisation, and open-source operating system (OS) Linux. This makes them the cheapest solution available. Container VPSs can cost as little as R110 or $4 per month. Virtual machines use a resource-intensive hardware virtualisation, and provide each VM with their own OS. Linux VMs can cost from R130 or $10 per month, whereas Windows VMs may cost from R400 or $30 pm.
